Union Dues and Other "2%" Expenses

Enter here your expenses that count, for tax purposes, as "miscellaneous itemized deductions subject to the 2% threshold."

These include:

  • Union dues (but not voluntary contributions to union strike funds).
  • Unreimbursed employee business expenses.
  • Amounts paid to accountants and others for tax preparation.
  • Amounts paid to a lawyer for tax advice.
  • The cost of this program, if you use it for tax help (as you should).
  • Dues you pay to professional societies (but not country clubs).
  • The costs of looking for a new job in your current line of employment.
  • The costs of uniforms that you must buy if you have to wear them for work, and they are not suitable for street wear.

Note: For tax purposes, these are deductible only to the extent they exceed 2% of your adjusted gross income. That means that, for many people, there is no actual tax deduction associated with these items.
