California Law - What Are Some Examples of Spousal Support Awards? Here are some cases in which the amount of spousal support was the focus. Martin (1991) 280 Cal Rptr 565, 229 Cal App 3d 1196. (Court awarded $600 per month, which is $7,200 per year. The Husband was earning $54,000, plus a $5,000 bonus, plus free housing worth $6,000. The wife was earning $38,000 a year. The appeals court found that the $600 per month award was an acceptable amount for the trial judge to have awarded.) Smith (1990) 274 Cal Rptr 911 (on modification after husband's income increased, $39,600 per year was awarded to wife, age 59, who could not work, from husband who was earning approximately $200,000 a year; at this point all children had graduate college). Wright (1976) 131 Cal Rptr 870, 60 CA 3d 253. (The court awarded $2,000 per month for ten years, and $1,500 per month thereafter. The husband's income was between $100,000 and $130,000 a year.)
