Florida Law - Can the Court Order Parenting Counseling?

A parenting course of a minimum of four hours total is required in Florida before a couple who have children at home may obtain a divorce. The course is called "Parent Education and Family Stabilization Course."

According to the statute, the subject matter covered should include:

• Legal aspects of deciding child-related issues between parents.
• Emotional aspects of separation and divorce on adults.
• Emotional aspects of separation and divorce on children.
• Family relationships and family dynamics.
• Financial responsibilities to a child or children.
• Issues regarding spousal or child abuse and neglect.
• Skill-based relationship education that may be generalized to parenting, workplace, school, neighborhood, and civic relationships.

Parents need not attend the course together.

A judge may excuse a party from attending, for good cause in a particular case.
