Ahrons Study of 98 Families in the Madison, Wisconson Area

In 1979-1984, Constance Ahrons led a 98-family study of families in and around Madison Wisconsin.

The study was funded by the National Institutes of Mental Health and the University of Wisconsin graduate school.

The study gave rise to her book, The Good Divorce .

Here is some background on the families in the study.

  • The average duration of the marriage was 11 years.
  • Of the families, 2/3 had been separated before divorce. Separations averaged 1 to 2 years.
  • A little over half the fathers and 38% of the mothers were college graduates.
  • About 75% of the women were employed full time.
  • Average household income prior to divorce was approximately $21,000 (in 1979). After divorce, it was $15,000 for women and $21,000 for men.
  • Of the families, 70% had more than one minor child.
  • There were an average of 2 children per family.
  • The children were: 20% preschool, 50% elementary school, 30% adolescents.
