Your Lawyer's Experience You want to find out about your lawyer's experience. How long has he or she practiced law? How much of that time has been spent in divorce law (also known as matrimonial law or family law)? Probably a few years is plenty long enough to learn the ropes. As divorce law is a burnout profession, there are not very many older divorce lawyers. What percent of your lawyer's practice is matrimonial law? (You should look for a higher than 50 percent figure.) If you have children, what percent of his or her cases involve contested custody situations?
