Babies and Toddlers
Babies notice the absence of one parent (usually the
father). This makes the baby cling fearfully to the one parent he has left.
Erin, exhausted and angry herself, possibly back at work, really
needs her own space in her limited time off.
But baby Calvin is suddenly clingy all the time. After awhile, Erin pushes him away,
saying "Enough already, Cal!" But it isn't enough for Cal. Erin needs to
indulge the baby, tired though she may be, until the baby
feels comfortable again.
Some mothers go the other way, not letting go of the baby themselves.
They use time with the baby as a way of consoling themselves. And
they take absolute control over the baby as an expression of the
control they need over the rest of their lives. These mothers need
to be willing to let the baby move to the next stage of independence.
Babies need a stable environment. They probably are not old enough
yet to understand "joint custody." Psychologists recommend leaving a
baby in one home all the time.
