How Should I Handle Myself
The following advice is focused on impressing a judge who is thinking about
custody, but it is good advice overall as well.
-
If you drink to get drunk, or you use drugs, stop. Alcohol and drugs actually make
things worse. Even Valium can make things worse for you in the long run. If you
think you might need help stopping, get help. If you are worried about how it
will look if you are "in rehab," think about this: the judge will hear all about
your problems from your spouse. You will have a much stronger case if you are
in treatment and staying clean and sober than if you are in denial.
-
Don't gamble.
-
If you are abusive to your spouse, stop being abusive. You might want to
seek therapy, which can have some success. Often, therapy helps people understand
that the impulse to abuse the spouse stems from feelings of powerlessness or
inadequacy, frustration, and a desire to be powerful. The therapy gives people other
ways of dealing with these feelings, rather than being abusive to others.
