Dealing With Alcohol And Drug Abuse If one of the parties is abusing alcohol and drugs, this may be a sign that that party is feeling afraid or inadequate. Often, people who use alcohol and drugs have fears and insecurities that they are unable to admit to their spouses or to themselves. These insecurities may cause pain in the marriage, which only serve to increase the party's need for the alcohol or drugs. If you can address these underlying feelings of fear and inadequacy, you have a better chance of confronting the addiction itself. (This is why the 12-step programs emphasize self-acceptance and self-affirmation.) If you are the person who is drinking or taking the drugs, we say this: alcohol and drug abuse deaden your awareness of the problems, but they are not as good as confronting and dealing with them. Dealing with the problems is often not as difficult as you fear it will be. And, as you probably know, alcohol and drugs make the problem worse in the long run. Needless to say, our discussion of this topic is very, very brief. If drugs or alcohol are in the picture, you both should see a counselor of your choosing about the situation.
