Defining Events That May Have Shaped You and Your Family

One of the ways to see the effect of your family on you now is to ask if there were any defining events in your family growing up. Defining events include:

• Deaths
• Betrayals
• Divorces
• Long illnesses

If there were any of these defining events, ask yourself the following:

Ask: what happened in the family at that time? How has that affected each person's:

• Self-esteem.
• Fear of rejection.
• Fear of power.
• Fear of competence.
• Fear of success.
• Fear of failure.
• Fear of attractiveness.
