Goals of Lawyers versus Mediators The law requires a lawyer to get as much for his client (in terms of money, custody, or other contended aspects) as he or she can. Mediators, by contrast, are allowed to consider more broadly what is best for both of you. Lawyers want to win, where winning means getting more money, usually, no matter what the human cost. Mediators want to resolve the financial and custody issues fairly and quickly, and point you in a direction to help start the next chapter in your life.
