Your Lawyer's Style Some lawyers tend to be very take-charge. Others tend to be very consultative. Divorce is usually an unfamiliar situation to the people who are in it. Often, one partner knows little about finances in general and nothing about the marital finances in particular. That spouse is tempted to hire a take-charge lawyer. What that spouse does not realize is that, in the end, he or she is going to have to learn all these things, and that in the end no one can make good decisions for you. Often, too, the take-charge demeanor masks a contempt for the client. The lawyer takes charge because he or she believes that the client's input is not valuable. If you are feeling lost and vulnerable (as many people do at this moment), such a message coming from your own representative is perhaps not the most helpful. On the other hand, if you really want to wallow in your anger and grief (which we don't recommend), then a take-charge lawyer might be just the thing for you. By the way, a key goal of the program is to let people, at their own pace and in the comfort of their homes, learn all they need to know about the unfamiliar and frightening legal and financial aspects of the divorce, so they can take control of the situation.
