Lawyer Mediators Versus Gladiators Some lawyers tend to function almost like mediators, or to encourage you to use mediators. Others tend to function more like gladiators. Some lawyers are motivated by a desire to help people who are in bad straits. They want to see both of you launched safely on your post-divorce lives. In other words, these lawyers work like mediators. It's a delicate balancing act, since the legal creed requires them to fight for the highest settlement possible regardless of the human destruction that is left behind. But some lawyers quietly ignore the legal creed and simply work for balanced outcomes. These lawyers tend to have some of the advantages of mediators. On the other hand, if you have decided that your primary goal in life from now on is going to be to crush, destroy and humiliate your spouse, regardless of the effect on your own life, then a mediating lawyer might not be the best one for you. In that case, you might want to look for a gladiator lawyers. Gladiator lawyers can take a situation where both parties agree on the divorce, but there are strong feelings of antagonism, anger, regret, and blame (the usual case) and turn it into a totally-out-of-control all-consuming anger and paranoia. Stumbling into the office of a gladiator lawyer when that's not really what you want can literally ruin your life and the lives of your children. Finding a divorce lawyer is not like picking a detergent, and in some ways it's even harder and more critical than finding a good doctor.
