Open Your Own Checking Account

Open a checking account in your own name, to which your husband does not have access.

You might want to do this at a bank separate from the one where your joint account is located.

Fund it with whatever money you can. You may need it for living expenses until the divorce is settled.

Some legal strategists recommend withdrawing half of your joint checking account funds and putting it in this account.

You have to think through all the implications of such an act before doing it.

You might want to get a post office box and have the bank send the statements to the P.O. box.

Always keep track of the sources of the funds that go into that account. Some if it may be "marital" funds which you will have to divide with your husband in the property settlement.
