Guidelines For Keeping Post-Divorce Discussions Calm.
Here are some guidelines for keeping post-divorce discussions calm.
-
Limit your contact and topics of discussion with the ex-spouse to what is agreed to be necessary for the children.
-
Try to avoid highly controversial, but settled subjects, like
alimony or support, in your conversations with your ex-spouse.
-
Try to make some subjects out-of-bounds, like your spouse's spending
habits or dating habits, in your conversations with your ex-spouse.
-
Resist the attempt to make a "come-back" when your spouse says something that attacks or angers you.
-
Arrange to discuss difficult subjects in a public place.
-
Handle difficult discussions by letter (e-mail would probably
work as well). Go through the letter or e-mail before you send it
and cut out anything that would anger the spouse.
-
Focus on understanding why the other person did the unforgivable
thing (pressures, his or her own parents, etc.). This helps you see
him or her as a fallible human, rather than as a demon.
