How is the Child Support Amount determined? Every state has a formula for calculating child support, based on a specified percentage of "income." The question is, "what income?" Some states look at the income of the non-custodial parent. Other states consider the incomes of both parents. Most states also increase child support, at least to a point, as the number of children increases. The states also vary widely on exactly what counts as "income," and then the percent of income that is specified for child support. Very, very roughly, you can think about having 10% to 30% of the non-custodial spouse's income go to child support.
