Can Child Support Payments Be Modified?
In most states, child support can be modified only if there is a substantial
change in circumstances.
This might include:
-
Dramatic changes in income. (But a payer who quits his job in order to reduce child support will not find a sympathetic court.)
-
A child's going off on his or her own.
Often the judge will ask whether the change would alter the child support award
by more than 10%. If yes, then the judge might allow the support to be modified. If
no, then the judge does not want you clogging the courtroom with your request.
