Issues Around Money For the Children
Each parent virtually always thinks the other is not spending enough
money on the children. The alimony recipient thinks the payer is not
giving enough, and the payer always focuses on a frivolous
expenditure the recipient made, to say that the recipient is not
spending the money well.
Here are suggestions for minimizing the inevitable money disputes.
-
Focus on the children. In the stereotypical situation, the
mother has to beg the father for clothes or other extras for the
child. But Clifford doesn't let Clare be the sole representative of the
children in the child support negotiations. He is also trying to do
what is best for the children. If he didn't, the children could
align against him. Or, they could try to get from him clothes or
toys that Clare says she can not afford. That would upset Clifford, and
make him less happy to see the children.
-
Make decisions together. Clifford and Clare make the difficult
decisions about the children -- private school, camp, music lessons -- together. The
discussions certainly are not easy for either of them. But
the children benefit from having a united parental position on these issues.
-
Live with less. Clifford and Clare have explained to the children
that they will have to live with less. Both Clifford and Clare accept
this. To maintain two homes and give the kids everything they would
have had in the marriage is not possible.
