Learn How to Argue
You can learn ways of arguing that can be less toxic. Here are some
highlights.
-
Take time to listen to what your spouse is saying.
-
When it is your turn to speak, do not attack your spouse
personally, but try to understand what is really upsetting him or her.
-
Be honest with yourself. Be ready to concede points where your
spouse is right.
-
Try to figure out what your own real needs are.
-
Let your spouse win whenever possible. (An old saying goes, "It's better to be happy
than right.")
-
Do not distort, exaggerate, or bully. (This one is tough.)
-
Do not refer to old failures of your spouse or to your spouse's weak spot.
-
Say what you believe. Do not retreat in silence.
-
Focus more on the future than the past. "Let's forget about
what happened, but in the future...."
