Learn How to Argue

You can learn ways of arguing that can be less toxic. Here are some highlights.

  • Take time to listen to what your spouse is saying.
  • When it is your turn to speak, do not attack your spouse personally, but try to understand what is really upsetting him or her.
  • Be honest with yourself. Be ready to concede points where your spouse is right.
  • Try to figure out what your own real needs are.
  • Let your spouse win whenever possible. (An old saying goes, "It's better to be happy than right.")
  • Do not distort, exaggerate, or bully. (This one is tough.)
  • Do not refer to old failures of your spouse or to your spouse's weak spot.
  • Say what you believe. Do not retreat in silence.
  • Focus more on the future than the past. "Let's forget about what happened, but in the future...."
