Legal Custody
Legal custody refers generally to the legal authority to make key
decisions for the child.
The decisions that the person (or people) who have legal custody make
include the following:
-
Religion.
-
Major medical decisions.
-
Education (assuming it is affordable).
Legal custody may be "sole" (one person) or "joint" (both of you).
Joint legal custody is more common than joint physical custody. This
is because it is possible to contribute to key decisions without
having the difficult task of coordinating living arrangements.
