Seventy Percent of Women Who Will Remarry Do So Within 3 Years.

Women who are going to remarry do so relatively soon after the divorce.

Seventy percent of those who will eventually remarry are remarried by 3 years after divorce. Another 15% of those who would remarry remarried over years 4 through 15 following the divorce. The remaining fifteen percent did not remarry until over 15 years after the divorce.

The 1990 census bureau survey found that half of all divorced women who remarried did so within 2.5 years of the divorce.

The following chart shows the percent of the total remarried who had done so by each milestone. The difference between 40-49 year olds and 50-59 year olds may be attributable to generational differences.

Women who were age 40-49 in June, 1990:

  • Of those who ultimately remarried, 70.3% remarried within 3 years.
  • Of those who ultimately remarried, 72.9% remarried within 5 years.
  • Of those who ultimately remarried, 80.0% remarried within 10 years.
  • Of those who ultimately remarried, 85.5% remarried within 15 years.

Women who were age 50-59 in June, 1990:

  • Of those who ultimately remarried, 66.3% remarried within 3 years.
  • Of those who ultimately remarried, 68.1% remarried within 5 years.
  • Of those who ultimately remarried, 73.1% remarried within 10 years.
  • Of those who ultimately remarried, 77.0% remarried within 15 years.
