Physical custody Physical custody refers to the place where the child physically spends most of his or her time. The alternative is called "split custody" or "joint physical custody." That refers to a situation where the child spends roughly half his or her time at each parent's home. Custody can be split either day by day, week by week, month by month, or season by season. The strong consensus today among lawyers, judges and psychologists is that, at least for pre-teens, split custody is too disorienting to the child. Children seem to do best if they have one place to call "home." It is useful to try to avoid focusing too much on the labels "joint custody," "sole custody" and so on. It is best to simply craft a parenting arrangement that works for you and the children, and not worry whether it is called "sole physical custody" or "joint physical custody."
