Prepare For Issues When You Date
Marvin continues to date his mistress, Blythe. Marvin's ex-wife Suzanna,
after a year or so of mourning and re-establishing herself as a person and
as a worker, is ready to start dating as well.
-
Spare the Details. Suzanna does not use her children as
confidants or counselors. She is careful to dress for her dates in
a modest way that makes her children comfortable. She generally does not
bring the dates home, to spare the children from having to deal with
them. If she finds a man with whom she contemplates a long-term
relationship, she will allow him to spend nights with the family.
Marvin also tries to be discreet. And Blythe, Marvin's girlfriend,
avoids treating Marvin's daughter Helene as a confidante. Otherwise,
Helene will start thinking of her father as a peer, when she needs
him to be a father.
-
Expect Hostility. With work, and shopping, Suzanna has little enough time for the children
as it is. The children do not want her going out on dates and depriving them
of what little time she has left. Suzanna tries hard to balance it all -- household maintenance,
work, parenting, and now dating. At Marvin's apartment, The children are also hostile to
Blythe, Marvin's girlfriend, seeing her as a cause of the breakup.
-
Expect Pressure to Remarry. Sometimes just the opposite may happen. The
children want Suzanna to be married again, so they can have help around
the house, and so Suzanna can be happier. So they urge her to date,
and they turn each date into a possible marriage partner. Suzanna has
to gently bring them back to reality.
