Pre-School
Preschoolers do not understand why the parents divorced. They tend
to have an exaggerated sense of their own role in things. The
divorce tends to bring out in them the following emotions:
-
Fear. They feel abandoned. They are very afraid of losing the other parent as well.
-
Clingy. They find separations from the custodial parent during the day stressful and frightening
-
Guilty. Kids tend to think they caused the divorce by being
bad. May try to be "super-good," in order to reverse the divorce.
-
Anxious. They may be preoccupied with anxiety and unable to do
things they were competent to do before.
-
Regressive. They may regress in toilet training, sleeping
alone, and other developmental things. They may have difficulty playing with other children.
-
Tearful. Kids may cry a lot more.
-
Irritable. They may become upset much more easily.
However, their fears, if addressed patiently and repeatedly, can be
somewhat calmed.
