Reasons for having an affair.

If your spouse is having an affair, try to understand why. Then you can plan your response.

When people are asked why they have affairs, they give a wide range of superficial responses. People say they were bored, or drunk, or looking for excitement.

But when you peel away the veneer, a few themes surface repeatedly.

• People feel that they have failed, and they are looking for support or an ego-booster .
• People are just plain angry at their spouses .
• People (usually women) are trying to achieve an intimacy that they do not feel in their marriage.
• People (usually men) are trying to put some distance between themselves and their spouses .
• People long for a sense of adventure, or want to test boundaries .
