Reasons to Separate
Here are some indicators of when a separation might be a good idea.

Time alone to evaluate. Brian wants the relationship to work.
But he wants to separate to get some distance in which to understand
his feelings and the dynamics of the relationship.

Rehearsal for divorce. Don is pretty sure he wants a
divorce from Lenore, but he wants to separate to try it out. Don tells
Lenore that he is thinking of divorce. Don could instead tell Lenore
that he just "wants a breather," even though he knows otherwise.
Don probably is doing the right thing by telling Lenore just where he
stands. Otherwise, Lenore would feel betrayed and even angrier
when Don resists her attempts to join in probing the marriage.

If you are being abused. Cynthia is being abused by her
husband. She should separate from him.
A separation might
not
be a good idea if your motivation is to
get even with or to torment your partner. In that case, you might be
better off trying to understand the situation and talking it over
with your spouse.
