Courts Follow Formulas Judges are not absolutely bound by the guideline formulas. They usually can easily make minor deviations, based on the circumstances of the parties. In extreme situations, judges can ignore the guidelines entirely. In most cases, however, the judges do tend to follow the guideline formulas for child support. (Judges typically have a lot of leeway with property divisions, and sometimes they use the property division to compensate for perceived unfair results of the child support formulas.) By the way, in no state does the formula care about the behavior of either party.
