Step-siblings
Children may have to adopt to a new relationship with
step-siblings.
-
No longer youngest. A "youngest" child may have to adjust to the fact that he is
no longer the youngest.
-
No longer oldest. An "oldest" child may have to adjust to the fact that she is
no longer the oldest.
-
More kids. All the children have to adjust to the fact that
there are more children. Competition for parents' attention becomes
quite intense at times, with typical reactions of attention-deprived
children being the order of the day.
-
Different lifestyles. The children's first home may have been looser, with more
TV, less homework, and later bedtimes. The second home may not
run that way. This creates more resentment of the new spouse.
The adult couples need to recognize and expect these issues. When these issues arise,
the adults should try to discuss them openly with the children. The adults should treat
all the children with respect and love, and they may hope that, over
time, the hurts will heal.
