The Competitive Personality

Richard is an intensely competitive person. He has always performed to the very best of his ability. In fact, Helena thinks of him as an overachiever. Richard has been rising steadily in the company where he works, where he jokes he is now in "upper-middle class management."

Despite his achievement, Richard feels unworthy of his titles and success. He has what is called the "impostor syndrome." Richard has the feeling that his peers in the company really deserve to be where they are, but that he does not.

To test himself, Richard will compete with anyone, any time, about anything.

Richard views his promotions at work as flukes, part luck, part hard work, but not at all due to innate ability.

Richard constantly looks to Helena for reassurance. But no amount of reassurances can make Richard feel comfortable. Helena feels very frustrated that so many of their conversations seem to go around in circles, with Richard asking for approval, and then rejecting it when she gives it.

Richard needs to relax and realize that he's not an impostor -- at least, not any more than anyone else. Then he and Helena can start enjoying their successful life together.
