Wallerstein Study of 60 Families in the San Francisco, California Area Judith Wallerstein led from 1971 through at least 1989 a study of 60 families with 131 children, following them five, ten, and in some cases fifteen years after divorce. This was apparently the only study of its kind started in 1971, and so it is the only study that can give us "20 years later" data in the 1990's. Of the original 131 children, 116 were available at the ten-year followup. The study is reported extensively in two books:
Her published findings had a great to do with de-bunking the myth that "the children would just bounce back" after a divorce. Prior to this study, the popular wisdom had been that the children's "natural resilience" would enable them to recover completely from a divorce without any kind of discussions or special attention. When you read the numbers from this study, it may be well to keep in mind that the families in this study all responded to an offer of free marital counseling in exchange for participating. As a result, they may have represented families that were more troubled than the "average" divorcing family. Also all these families were divorced in 1971 or thereabouts. Over a quarter century ago, this was before the approaches to understanding and helping the spouses and children of divorce, such as are described elsewhere in this program, had been developed. Judith Wallerstein is continuing the study, to follow the parents and children at the 25 year mark, but the next book in the series has not yet been published.
