Wanting the Children In their agreement, Jamail settled for custody on weekends and Wednesday nights. But Jamail finds himself missing the children more than he ever could have imagined. He thinks Yolanda is far too rigid, and he starts thinking about asking for custody. If Yolanda has left Jamail, Jamail has to ask himself whether his desire for custody is really only a desire to hold on to the structure of his life by keeping the kids (and house) around. Sometimes, men ask for custody because they truly want to be a bigger part of their children's lives, and to give emotionally (and exhaustingly) to their children. Sometimes, however, a man's anger over a perception that his ex-wife is a poor parent is, in part, a desire to inject himself into the parenting process, to compensate for his own loneliness. Some men would be excellent custodial parents. However, if you are a man asking for custody, ask yourself about these points -- and try to be honest with yourself about the answers.
