Where To Go For References
Here are some places you can go to get references for a lawyer:
-
Support Group. Perhaps the best place to go is a support group, where you can meet a number of people
and hear about their experiences with their lawyers. You can find not only which lawyers are
more competent (always a concern), but also which lawyers match the style you want.
-
Friends and Relatives. You can ask friends and relatives. Be careful, though, because a
lawyer who was a good fit for a friend may not necessarily be a good fit for you.
-
Yellow pages. Lawyers are listed in the yellow pages, and you should be able to find lawyers who
specialize in divorce. This is a shot in the dark, though. But with some diligent phone-interviewing
you should be able to locate a lawyer who fits your needs and style.
-
Internet. Some lawyers list themselves on Web sites dedicated to divorce. These lawyers are simply
advertising on those sites. The listing does not tell you anything in particular about those lawyers -- except
that they are technologically aware enough to be considering the Web.
