Your Children In School
You can expect problems at school. The list below includes some of
the more prominent behaviors of the children of divorce in school.
-
Acting out. Some students act badly, take drugs, etc. Although
it may appear that this is a reaction to grief (and it may be), often
this is just as a stratagem to bring the parents together in a room with a
counselor. The child hopes, oddly enough, to perhaps spark a
reconciliation. He hopes that the parents, by focusing on him, will
forget their own conflicts. He also is letting the parents know that
the child is hurting and needs attention. Please heed these signs.
Let the child know, firmly but lovingly, that the divorce is final.
And try to give him all the attention for which you have energy.
-
Bullying. Bullying is an attempt to build up a sense of being
worthwhile. Give the child lots of love and attention.
-
Daydreaming. Daydreaming is an escape mechanism and probably should be accepted for awhile.
-
Embarrassment. Many students are embarrassed about their
parents' divorce. Teach them to be
open about the situation and accept whatever feelings that evokes in
others, then to move on.
