Massachusetts Law - What Are The Child Support Guidelines? Under federal law each state has established a mathematical formula for calculating child support. (Click here to read why and here for an overview of these formulas.) The courts tend to follow these formulas pretty closely. (Click here for more on this.) This screen will give a brief overview of the Massachusetts child support guidelines. Massachusetts has one of the higher guideline amounts in the country. This is because the guidelines are based on gross income with no deductions allowed, and then call for a high percentage -- often around 20% to 30% -- of that income to be paid in child support.
