Massachusetts Law - When Can Child Support Awards Be Modified? Child support awards may typically be modified whenever there is a change in circumstances such that the application of the child support guidelines would give a different result than the current order. Typical changes include an increase or decrease in the income of either party, or if there is a need to provide health care for the child. Section 28. Cases: Freedman (1990) 557 NE2d 1386 (The lower court's decree was modified, reducing husband's payment to $1,000 per month. When the daughter would leave home, the payment would drop to $500. The decree was reduced because the wife was receiving economic assistance from her cohabitant.)
