Massachusetts Law - What Are The Grounds for Divorce Massachusetts has both fault-based and no-fault grounds for divorce. Most divorces are filed on the no-fault grounds, but some allege cruel and abusive treatment. The law books in Massachusetts still list other grounds such as adultery, impotence, desertion for a year, drinking or drug abuse, or neglect of support. However, it is not necessary for any of those grounds to apply in order to obtain a divorce.
