Massachusetts Law - What is the "Separation Date"? The exact separation date has significance in many states, because that is the date that the "marital portion" of assets and debts stops accruing. However, in Massachusetts, the separation date does not really have financial significance in most cases. Courts may still be more likely to leave debts and assets accumulated after one party moves out with that party. But this is not as clear in Massachusetts as in many other states.
