Michigan Law - What Are The Child Support Guidelines?

Under federal law each state has established a mathematical formula for calculating child support. (Click here to read why and here for an overview of these formulas.)

The courts tend to follow these formulas pretty closely. (Click here for more on this.)

This screen briefly describes the approach used in the Child Support Guidelines in Michigan.

Child support in Michigan is based primrily on the following factors:

  • The combined gross incomes of the parents, with adjustments for prior support and support of subsequent families. (The higher the combined gross incomes, the higher is the support obligation.)
  • The portion of that income earned by the non-custodial parent. (The higher is the portion, the higher is the support obligation.)
  • The number of children. (The more children, the higher the support obligation.)
