Michigan Law - Life Insurance On the Payer. In Michigan there are no laws that specifically authorize a court to require, as part of its order, that the payer obtain life insurance on his own life, with the recipient as beneficiary. The goal of the requirement would be to provide for child support and maintenance in the event the payer dies before all those payments have been made. The parties are free themselves to agree to such an arrangement, however. Cases: Merchant (1983) 130 Mich App 566 (no statute authorizes a court to order life insurance).
