Michigan Law - Can One Party Alone Bring About a Divorce? Either party alone may cause a divorce to occur. Cases: Groteleuschen, 113 Mich App 395 (In this case, the court determined that a divorce may be granted if either party no longer wishes to live together. The parties separated four years before the divorce was granted, when the wife moved out of the marital home. Two years before the divorce was granted, the husband moved out of the marital home to live with another woman. Although the wife still believed that the marriage could be saved, the husband showed no indication that he was willing to cooperate in salvaging the marriage. In granting the divorce, the court therefore concluded that a reconciliation between the husband and wife was not reasonably likely.)
