Ohio Law - What Are The Child Support Guidelines?

Under federal law each state has established a mathematical formula for calculating child support. (Click here to read why and here for an overview of these formulas.)

The courts tend to follow these formulas pretty closely. (Click here for more on this.)

This screen will provide a brief explanation of the approach to calculating the child support guidelines used in Ohio.

Child support in Ohio is based on the combined gross incomes of the parents with certain adjustments. The adjustments include:

  • Support and alimony paid under prior orders.
  • Mandatory deductions from wages such as union dues.
  • Local income taxes.
  • Ordinary and necessary business expenses for self-employed individuals.

The guideline support amount is then based on a table for the combined incomes. The noncustodial parent's payment is that parent's share of the combined incomes * the guideline support amount.
