Pennsylvania Law - What Are Some Examples of Alimony Awards?

The following are some cases involving alimony awards in Pennsylvania.

Harasym (1992) 614 A.2d 742, 418 Pa.Super. 486 (The court awarded the wife $24,000 a year alimony for four years. The wife was earning $22,000 a year, while the husband was earning $139,000. In its alimony award, the court also took into account that the wife's position was not permanent and that she was custodian of the party's two children. The wife was also awarded the marital home, a four year old Audi, savings accounts, and debts, for a net value of $87,000. The husband was awarded stock, a pension, savings accounts, a ten year old Subaru, and a five year old BMW for a total value of $86,000, less debts. In addition, the court ordered the husband to pay $1400 a month in child support. The parties had been married for 14 years. Their two children were aged 12 and 10 at the time of the divorce.)

Miller (1986) 508 A.2d 550, 352 Pa.Super. 432 (The court ordered the husband to pay $3,300 alimony a year (or 20% of his income), during the proceedings and continuing after the divorce. At the time of the divorce, the husband was earning $17,000 a year while the wife was earning $4,000. The 53 year old wife was suffering from arthritis and was unable to work full-time, although she also maintained the house during the marriage. The wife was awarded the marital home, valued at $17,000. The 54 year old husband was awarded two pension funds valued at $33,000. The parties had been married for 33 years.)
