Pennsylvania Law - What Are The Child Support Guidelines?

Under federal law each state has established a mathematical formula for calculating child support. (Click here to read why and here for an overview of these formulas.)

The courts tend to follow these formulas pretty closely. (Click here for more on this.)

This screen will give a brief overview of the Pennsylvania child support guidelines.

For complete coverage of the Pennsylvania child support guidelines, see the Pennsylvania guidelines in the "Guidelines" tab.

In Pennsylvania, the child support guideline calculates a percent of combined net income, then assigns to the payer an amount proportionate to the payer's share of combined net income.

There are many exceptions and special cases, including low-income exception, exceptions for non-custodial parents who spend 40% or more of nights with the child, special for certain expenses such as health insurance, medical, day care, private school, camp, and mortgage expenses, a high income exception, a special case for multiple families being supported, and so on.
