Texas Law - What Are The Grounds for Divorce

Most divorces in Texas are obtained on the grounds that the marriage has become "insupportable". That is equivalent to saying that one or both parties definitely want to end the marriage.

Other grounds for divorce are:

• A felony conviction (except on testimony of the other spouse).
• Cruelty.
• Intentional abandonment for at least one year.
• Living apart for three years.
• Confinement to a mental hospital for at least three years.
