When Might Spousal Support Be Modified? In general, spousal support may be modified upon a significant change in circumstances. This usually means a substantial change in the income of either of the parties. Spousal support usually stops if either party dies, or if the recipient remarries, but the parties are allowed to agree that support will continue to be paid after the death of the payer. (Typically, this is funded by insurance, or by the estate of the payer.) Sometimes, it stops if the recipient lives with another person. However, this often is a condition that the parties negotiate. If temporary spousal support is granted under the expectation that the recipient spouse will become self-supporting, and that does not happen, the recipient spouse can sometimes request an extension of the alimony. The recipient spouse will have to show a good reason why he or she did not become self-supporting as expected.
