How is Child Support Enforced?

Historically, a high percentage of child support obligations remained unpaid, especially where the payer moved to another state.

State and federal lawmakers have passed several laws to address this, and to improve child support collections.

In particular, every state must adopt the Uniform Interstate Family Support Act, which provides for a unified national approach to the enforcement of child support orders.

Also, the Child Support Recovery Act of 1992 makes it a federal crime to deliberately withhold child support payments to a person who lives in another state.
