Example of Current Value Pension
Here is an example that illustrates the "current value" method of pension distribution.
Using statistical methods,
the pension is estimated to be worth $30,000 today. (You can estimate the value today of
a defined benefit pension in
the program
, in the Finance Section.)
The judge awards $10,000 of this $30,000 to the non-employee spouse. This $10,000 comes
out of other marital assets.
At retirement, the employee spouse receives the entire pension, whatever it ends up
actually being worth.
